Deceased was a member of Lafayette Lodge No. 415, K. of H., Jewel of the West Lodge No. 349, K. & L. of H., also fire engine company No. 12.

February 3, 1902 Seven city firemen where killed in a fire at the American Tent and Awning Company at Third and Chestnut. First Assistant Chief August Thierry was among the dead. The wall of the building collapsed on the firefighters just as they were satisfied the blaze was under control.
