Virgil G. Thayer, 85, of Traverse City, died early Saturday morning, Nov. 23, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 16, 1917, in Bellaire, to Shirl and Hazel (Geary) Thayer.
Virgil loved the land and the people of this area and devoted his life to preserving the land's natural beauty. He was employed with the Soil Conservation Service for 25 years retiring in 1975, and then continued working as a soil erosion and sedimentation officer for another eight years, retiring in 1981. He had been a member of Asbury Methodist Church since 1950.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife, Fern (Somerville) Thayer; his three daughters, Jacklyn (Chesley) Culp of Englewood, Colo., Shelley (David Schwartz) Thayer of San Clemente, Calif., and Janice Francisco of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Chesley Culp III of Engelwood, Colo., Benjamin (Michele) Culp of Silver Spring, Md., Todd (Marie) Francisco of
Grand Blanc, and Michelle Francisco of Rockford; two great-grandchildren, Wilhelmina and Lilian Francisco of Grand Blanc; half brother, William (Ida) Thayer of Dexter, and half sister, Dolly Ann (William) Mills of Panama City, Fla.; and many cousins. He will be missed by those who love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Stephen LeRoy Thayer.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Williams officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time
of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Asbury Methodist Church, or to the Traverse City Senior Center.
