Leah Thacker Casper

At the age of fourteen, Leah became the main cook at her father's mill. She was a marvelous cook and was well known for her bread, raised doughnuts and Apple Brown Betty.

She also graduated from eighth grade from the Charleston Grade School at age fourteen. She was such a sweet unselfish girl that she stayed home from further school to take care of her ailing mother. Her younger sister, Eva, often said that after her mom's health failed, Leah was more like a mother than a sister, and they all went to Leah for hugs and solace. This continued throughout her life.

This same year, Leah was called to teach the Kindergarden class in Sunday School. She loved the calling and held it until she was married.

Now that she was fourteen and camp cook at her father's sawmill, it resulted in a meeting that would change the entire course of her life.

Moroni Jedediah "Rone" Casper hauled ore and freight to the Uintah Basin and also worked for Leah's father. It didn't take long for him to notice the pretty little cook. They became very good friends, but romance took a while to blossom. He was nine years older and thought maybe she'd like a younger man. Somewhere along the line, she convinced him that age made no difference for her.

She was nineteen years old when they married on June 17, 1911 in the Salt Lake Temple. They went to Provo on the "Heber Creeper" train and then on to Salt Lake City on the Interurban. They were married the next morning. They returned to Charleston the following day. Rone always said "Marrying her was the best thing I ever did."

They settled in Charleston where two little girls were born to them. Donna Maria and three years later LaNora. The girls were given middle names to honor their grandmothers.

During the early years of their marriage, Rone worked construction jobs on the roads at the mills. Leah often worked as a cook on these projects. She also worked at the Heber Hospital for a time as a cook.

Leah spent many hours assisting in the homes at times of illness and childbirth. She opened her home to women to give birth and cared for them for 10 days to two weeks after they gave birth.
