Effie Mae Ellender, 101, of Baytown, passed away, Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at her home.

Effie was born May 10, 1902 in Marion, Indiana. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church, past president of U.S.C.S., a member of The Ladie s Bible Class, DAR UMW/XYZ and a nonactive member in Easter n Star. After Effie was widowed she moved to Baytown in 192 9 and worked as a nurse with Dr. Lillie and Dr. Duke and Dr . Marshal and helped delivered half the babies of Baytown between 1929-1940. After she married George Ellender in 1940 , she taught Sunday School many years at St. John's Methodist Church and Cedar Bayou Methodist Church. She was president of W.S.C.S., which is now the United Methodist Women, and she worked for the district for 20-plus years and helped organize Westlyn Service Guild for young women. She was a talented seamstress, a delightful, wonderful person who never knew a stranger and was always ready to help others . The last years of her life with failing eyesight, she made canvas Bible bookmarks and gave them to everyone she met . She still went to Sunday School, Church, UMW/XYZ and some times DAR until recently.

She was preceded in death by her siblings; her husbands, Robert J. Smith and George L. Ellender; and grandson, Dudley Bowman.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laura Fae Templin and husband Robert of Baytown; step-daughters and sons-in-law, Marie Garrett of Baytown and Rosa Mae Bowman and husband Joe of Baytown; grandchildren, Laura Jean Skiles of San Diego, Calif.; Ralph Dumoit and wife Mary Ann of Cypress; Phyllis Saile of Baytown; James Dumoit and wife Alisa of Moheyan Lake, NY; 19 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, August 23, 2003 at Navarre Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2003 at Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Lyles and Rev. James Frazier officiating.

Interment will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to Cedar Bayou United Methodist Church or Odyssey Hospice or the charity of your choice.
