Florence Elizabeth Taylor Smith died on July 1, 1990 at Saint Benedict's hospital following a long illness.
She was born in Ogden, Utah on September 17, 1899, the eighth child of Joseph Ezra And Sarah Ellen Barker Taylor.
She is survived by two sisters, Viola Marie Carr of Ogden; and Lillian Ruth Buskirk of Beaumont, California; one brother Albert Earl Taylor of Milpitas, California. She is also survived by her son, John D. Smith of Ogden; and her granddaughter, Kathleen Marie Holdaway, also of Ogden; and two great-grandchildren, Quentin Taylor Holdaway and Jessica Rachel Holdaway.
Mrs. Smith had been retired from Pacific Telisis since 1954 having begun her working life with Mountain States Telephone company in 1917. She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1923 to marry Sidney George Smith on October 29, 1923. Mrs. Smith remained in California until 1970 at which time she moved back to Ogden to be near her remaining brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Smith was long-time member of the famous Los Angeles Stake Singing Mother's Chorus providing a good strong alto voice. Mrs. Smith became a resident of Ogden, Utah again on September 17, 1970 where she became very active in the Ogden 6th Ward Primary, Relief Society and Sunday School organizations. Most of her church assignments were involved with music programs, and she was at one time or another Primary, Relief Society and Sunday School chorister. She had also been the Relief Society literary teacher plus her regular assignment as a visiting teacher. In addition to her church activities, Mrs. Smith volunteered once or twice a week as a teacher's aide for the handicapped children of Ogden's Gramercy School until ill health forced her resignation in 1979. Mrs. Smith took great pride in being the descendant of some of the earliest pioneer families to settle in the Salt Lake valley.
