World War I Ace. Seven victories. A graduate of the University of Toronto, he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in April 1916. He was commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant in July 1917 and entered service with the Royal Naval Air Service and scored his first victory in September 1917 flying a Sopwith Camel. Shortly after the RNAS was merged into the Royal Air Force, in April 1918, he participated in the series of dogfights that led to the death of the Red Baron. On May 2, 1918, he became an ace by shooting down German ace Hans Weiss, but was shot down and killed himself two months later. His body was not recovered. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre by France. (bio by: Kenneth Gilbert)
