Washington, D. C., July 17. -- Brig. Gen. Charles Jacobs Symmonds, 74, U. S. A., retired, died yesterday at his home in Chevy Chase, Md. He retired in 1930. Born in Holland, Mich., Gen Symmonds was graduated from the United States Military academy in 1890. He served as captain in Cuba during the Spanish-American war. During the World war, in which his only son was killed, Gen. Symmonds commanded the intermediate depot of the American Expeditionary Force at Gievres. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. After the war he served as a cavalry commander stationed at Fort Bliss, Tex., and for two years was commandant of the cavalry school at Fort Riley, Kas. Before retirement his home was at Kenosha, Wis., where a brother, Frank, S. Symonds, and a sister, Miss Lizzie Symonds, live. Funeral services will be held at Arlington National cemetery tomorrow.
