Dorothy Swasey Gifford, 96, of Oakland, ME and Farmington, died Wednesday (August 22, 2001) at a nursing home in Simsbury where she had been a resident for the past several months. She was born at Hillside Farm in Brentwood, NH, March 10, 1905, one of 11 children of John F. and E. Christine (Currier) Swasey. Dorothy attended grammar school in a one room school house in Brentwood, NH, graduated from Sanborn Seminary High School in Kingston, NH, and earned her teaching degree from Plymouth Normal School in Plymouth, NH. She taught 3rd grade at Exeter, NH, before her marriage, and in later years was a substitute teacher in the Hartford School System.
In 1926 she married Randall H. Gifford Sr. of Lewiston, ME and Steep Falls, ME. They were married 71 years until his death in 1997. Most of her married life she resided in West Hartford, and spent 68 summers at their summer camp on Messalonskee Lake in Oakland, ME. For 10 years she and her husband operated Camp Messalon, a boys summer camp on the lake. She and her husband loved to travel, having toured throughout the U.S. and Mexico in their travel trailer, and later wintered in Melbourne, FL. Dorothy enjoyed birds, flowers, reading and the Red Sox, and was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of West Hartford.
Surviving are three children, Randall H. Gifford Jr. of Farmington, ME, Joyce G. MacGovern of Farmington, CT, and Janet G. Ficken of Ellicott City, MD; three brothers, Joseph, Robert and John Swasey Jr.; three sisters, Muriel Littlefield, Lucille Haines and Rachel Rozencrantz; 11 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
