Born in Vecta Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany. Came to America with his parents in 1834, settling in central Ohio. Graduated from Ohio Medical college in Cincinnati in 1851. Began practicing medicine at Benton, Mo., then Evansville, Ind., and then Carmi, Ill. Married Mary Illinois Wilson, daughter of Judge William Wilson, chief justice of the supreme court of Illinois, in 1857. Moved to Sangamon County in 1880, locating at Illiopolis for six years, then moved to Springfield and resided there the rest of his life.

Graduated from the Chicago Law school in 1868 and confined himself to the practice of law. Member of Sangamon County bar association and admitted to practice in both state and federal courts. He wrote and published a history of Illinois, covering years 1673 to 1873. --

Survived by wife, daughters Misses Mary, Clementine and Alice Stuve; son Dr. Wilson Stuve. --IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 4-12-1903
