She was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Obion County, daughter of the late Walter and Nora (Rummage) Roberts. She married Melvin S. Sturgis on April 22, 1933. He died March 18, 1991.
She had taught in one-room schools for 12 years, with her husband teaching the upper level grades and serving as principal. They moved to the Holman community in 1941 and farmed there until his death. She was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church near South Fulton and had been active in the community.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy June and Ralph Nichols of Mason Hall; her daughter-in-law, Brenda Sturgis of Union City; her sister, Nell Davis of Union City; three grandchildren, Stephanie Sturgis of Dresden, Melissa Lyle of Union City and Dan Nichols of Kenton; and two great-grandchildren, Chance Lyle and Chase Lyle, both of Union City. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Dan Sturgis, three sisters, and five brothers.
