After graduating from Jefferson College in 1847 he read medicine with Dr. Alex. Hamilton Campbell of Uniontown and attended lectures at Jefferson Medical College. In 1853 he accepted a clerkship in the US mint which he held until 1861 when he returned to Uniontown to resume the practice of medicine. In 1886 he was appointed member of the State Board of Lunacy.
He married Emily V. Dawson in 1853, the daughter of John Dawson, and they had five children: John D., Daniel, Mary E., Katharine B. and Ellen B.
