Birth: Dec. 14, 1808
Crawford County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Jan. 2, 1896
Buckhorn
Jackson County
Iowa, USA

Mrs. Rachel Strayer was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, December 14, 1808, and died January 2, 1896. Her father Mr. Rallya, was a pioneer in Western Pennsylvania and a patriot who served in both wars of American Independence--1776 and 1812.
Miss Rallya grew to womanhood in her Pennsylvania home and was married to Martin Strayer in 1833, who preceded her to his eternal home, January 11, 1891. Fourteen children were born to this family and four died infancy. Five sons and four daughters, all of whom survive. One son is located in Washington state, one in Kansas, one in Pennsylvania, and two in this state, Jones and Woodbury counties. Three daughters live in Iowa and one in Georgia. All are married and have a family of children.
Mr. and Mrs. Strayer came west and settled in Jackson County, Iowa in the spring of 1866, but during the next twelve years they resided in Clinton and Jones Counties, when in 1878 they made their home with their daughter, Mrs. James Kauffman, until their death.
Mrs. Strayer became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in early life and lived a consistent Christian all her days. In her last illness and affliction she was patient and submissive to the Divine will, though confined to her bed the last two years, and ready to be released from her earthly frail body. She was a devoted mother and all who knew her loved and spoke praise. There are twenty-eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren living. From Obituary

This information comes from Carol Strayer: Rachel was the daughter of David & Rebecca (Gardner) Rallya. The last name Rallya is found spelled many different ways. I have seen it Raylla.
Rachel married Martin Strayer 20 June 1833 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Born to this union was fourteen children, four of whom died in infancy. Miley Henry, Anna, Levi B, Charles, Perry, Henry (Perry's twin died July 1847), William, Rachel (may of died infancy), Mary Ann, Nancy J and Rebecca.
