Lucy Philena Stone was born in the state of New York, one of the 9 children (8 daughters and a son) of Elijah Stone and Sarah Hadlock Wright. She married the widower Ozro Brackett on March 3, 1855 in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin. He was already the father of 2 children, Levi and Ira, by his 1st wife, Harriet Blackstone, and Lucy was to bear him 14 more (Alonzo, Ellen, Samuel, Anson, Addie, Edmund, Charles, Minnie, Alice, Luther, Ozro Jr., Amos, Effie Amy and Dora), bringing the family total to 16. They moved from Wisconsin to Franktown, Colorado (where Ozro was to live out the rest of his days) sometime before the end of 1864.

There was much tragedy in Lucy's life. Her eldest daughter Ellen was abducted by Indians at the age of 5 and never found; Edmund and Levi were murdered during other incidents in Colorado's turbulent past. Samuel, Minnie and Ozro, Jr. also died young. After the death of Ozro in 1889, Lucy remained in Franktown until 1904, when she moved to Tekoa, Washington to live with her daughter Addie and son-in-law Myron Brown until she passed away in 1916.
