Ferdinand Stoltenberg was born August 5, 1857 at Schleiswig-Holstein, Germany to Johannes Stoltenberg and Antje Stein. He had a sister, Katherine Stoltenberg who married Jochim Arp and emigrated in 1872 to Tama County, Iowa.

At age 17 (September 1874), Ferdinand, his father, Johannes Stoltenberg (age 59) and his mother, Antje (Stein) Stoltenberg (age 59) left Hamburg, Germany to travel on the ship "Goethe" to emigrate to Tama County, Iowa. They first stayed with his sister, Katherine and her husband, Jochim Arp.

Found in the 1885 census living at Kane, Benton, Iowa: single, working as a laborer: Ferdinand Stoltenburger age 27.

In 1887, he became a naturalized citizen.

He married Wilhelmina K Arp on March 4, 1890 at Tama, Iowa.

The couple had 5 children:
Otto Henry (b September 1, 1889 Oneida, Tama, Iowa, married Dena Bruns, d December 25, 1946 Troy, Pipestone, Minnesota);

Hattie Caroline (b January 19, 1891 Oneida, Tama, Iowa, married Lloyd Ingman Ihland, d August 21, 1980 Woodstock, Pipestone, Minnesota);

Ella Catherine (b February 10, 1894 Dysart, Tama, Iowa, married John Henry Deick, d November 12, 1984 Minneapolis, Minnesota);

Anna B (b November 15, 1896 Dysart, Tama, Iowa, married Henry James Deick, d November 25, 1972 Pipestone, Minnesota) and

LeRoy Ferdinand (b abt 1907 Pipestone, Minnesota, married Elizabeth Margaret Blair, d January 6, 1950 Ramsey, Minnesota.)

Found in the 1920, 1930 censuses at Elmer, Pipestone, Minnesota:
1920: Ferd Stoltenberg 62[63] , Minnie M Stoltenberg 49, Otto H Stoltenberg 30, Leroy F Stoltenberg 13, retired farmer

1930: Herdmord Stoltenberg 73, Minnie Stoltenberg 60.

Ferdinand died November 22, 1935 at Troy, Pipestone, Minnesota.

Obituary from the Pipestone MN Newspaper, Nov. 26, 1935:
The death of Ferdinand Stoltenberg of Trosky, occurred about 11 o'clock Friday morning, November 22nd, at the home of his son, Otto Stoltenberg in Troy township. The late Mr. Stoltenberg was born in Germany and was 76 years, 3 months, and 16 days old at the time of his death.

He emigrated from Germany to Tama County, Iowa in 1874. He was a farmer and also owned the Trosky Hotel for a while.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Boehmke funeral parlors and were conducted by Rev. E.L. Jones of the Presbyterian church. The burial was in the Woodlawn cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Hattie Ihlan, Mrs. Ella Deick, and Mrs. Anna Deick and two sons, Otto and LeRoy Stoltenberg and fourteen grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tams of Clutier, Iowa, and Jergen Jebe of LaPorte City, Iowa, were here from a distance to attend the funeral.

Even though I am sure his parents are buried in Tama County, Iowa, I haven't figured out where so have no memorials for them.
