Ruby Lee Stockard Douglass, formally of Lubbock, peacefully passed away at her home in Canyon, Texas on December 26, 2010. She was the widow of Gordon L. Douglass, and the daughter of John Sidney Stockard and Rosa Lee Vance Stockard of Denton.
Born October 14, 1912 in Lewisville, Texas, Ruby Lee was the eldest of four Stockard daughters. Her sister, Lucille Stockard, lives in Lubbock. Jackie Uehlinger and Ola Mae Ewing both passed away in November.
Ruby Lee earned her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees at the Texas State College for Women. She taught at Carroll Thompson Junior High, Lubbock High and Coronado High Schools. Her career spanned 33 years.
Ruby Lee loved teaching senior English, especially English literature, and received special joy watching her students succeed in their education and careers.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, and served as a teacher in the children's Sunday School and Training Union. She was in Prime Time Choir, Adult Sunday School, and Women's Missionary Union. Her faith in God showed through her daily life.
She was a charter member and active in the Alpha Kappa chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers, Reader's Club, Lubbock Art Association, Daughters of the Pioneers and "1942" Needle Club.
She is cherished by her daughter, Janet Douglass Fincher and her husband Irwin of Canyon; her son, Gordon Stockard Douglass and his wife Rella of Parker, Colorado; granddaughters, Janalyn Leigh and Lauren Leigh Fincher; great-granddaughters, Jacelyn and Ryleigh Fincher; nieces, Larita Ewing, Carole Uehlinger Bastian, and Janna Uehlinger Caywood; and nephew, Larry Ewing.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request memorials be made to the Prime Time Choir, First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held at Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Lubbock with Randy Holman, John Ballard, and D.L. Lowrie officiating. Interment at Resthaven Memorial Park will precede the service at 9:30 a.m.
