SUBLIMITY - Opal was the beloved daughter of Hayes and Alice Stockard of Hermiston, Oregon. The youngest of 7 children, Opal's childhood on the family farm was one of love, simple values, gentle discipline, and a deep faith in God. Her friends lived on either side of the farm…just across the wheat fields. She loved her 5 older brothers, who in turn loved and protected her as she grew up.

Opal loved music, and learned to play the family piano at the age of 8, exchanging a can of honey for her lessons. She later learned to play the organ as well. After high school, Opal attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, where her love for the Bible, for learning and for teaching became a life-long passion. While at NCC, she used these gifts to help to establish the First Christian Church at Marcola, Oregon. For much of the next 40 years, she taught Sunday school at First Christian Church in Salem, Oregon, starting with 6th grade, then later, teaching adult and senior classes. Several evening hours each week saw her sitting by the fireplace at home, Bible and notebook at hand, deepening her understanding of God's love and preparing her lessons for Sunday.

From NCC, Opal attended nursing school in Portland, Or, and then worked at the Tuberculosis Hospital in Salem, Oregon. While in Salem, Opal met the love of her life, Carol Capps, and they were married on July 22, 1941…a union which would last 70 years. Together they raised 4 children - Linda, Janet, Lorna and Darel. Opal's love for her family blessed their lives and those of their families. Hers was a gentle and consistent love…always understanding and supportive…and her warmth and humor reached out to all who were blessed to know her.

Opal enjoyed many things in life. Much of her life outside her family was focused on her church, whether it was teaching, bowling in the church league, organizing square dances in the church basement, or participating in women's groups. She leaves 2 legacies at her church: The beautiful stained glass windows that adorn the sanctuary which she led the effort to select, and surely more important, the many spirits and souls she touched during her years of teaching.

Opal helped organize the first special education class in Salem at Grant school so that developmentally disabled children would have the help they needed to learn basic skills and not be left behind. She also loved playing bunco and cards with her daughters and friends, playing golf, sharing her husband's love of horses on their small horse ranch, and spending many hours watching her son playing baseball.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents Hayes and Alice, brothers Clem, Paul, Shirley, Lowell, Victor, her sister Teresa, and her beloved grand-daughter Karen. She is survived by her husband Carol, her daughter Linda and husband Jerry Fetsch, her daughter Lorna and husband Ed Schwanke; her daughter Janet, her son Darel and his wife Linda, grandsons Alan Schwanke and Randy Fetsch, 4 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, October 15, 2011 at Salem First Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to Northwest Christian University in Eugene or to First Christian Church in Salem.
