Daughter of Thomas Shurtleff and Lodema Caroline Percival Shurtleff, granddaughter of Lothrop Shurtleff and Ruth Atwood, Charles Lewis Percival and Maria Kezar.
Helen was the wife of Henry Cushing Stevens, the son of Clarence Cushing Stevens and Mary Elizabeth Hoffman. They were married on May 11, 1904 in Cloverdale, CA, and had two sons:
* Clarence "Steve" Thomas Stevens
* John Shurtleff Stevens
Helen's birth certificate states she was born in California. Have not, to date, found it.
Helen moved to Auburn in Sept of 1898 and met Henry Stevens on her first night "out on the town" in Nov of 1898. Helen trained to be a nurse at St Luke's in San Francisco in 1901, moved to Nevada City with friends in what is now the Red Castle Inn Sept of 1903, and married Henry in 1904 in the parlour of her father's home.
Helen passed away quietly 7:40 am at the Ashby Hospital in Berkeley, near her home behind the key shop on 6050 College Avenue in Oakland. She will always be remembered as she puttered and cooked in the kitchen behind the key shop with an apron, standing on a rug that now adorns her grand-daughter's home.
Wedding notes: Aunt Mildred, Henry's sister, was the maid of honour, a Cyrus Dixon was the best man and Rev F W Crook of the Episcopal church performed the ceremony.
Newspaper clipping found in her belongings:
WILEY CUPID AT WORK - A pretty high noon wedding occurred last Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shurtleff when Mr. Shurtleff's daughter, Miss Helen Emily Shurtleff, became the bride of Henry Cushing Stevens of Sacramento. The nuptial vows were taken under a lovers' knot of ribbon and beautiful flowers suspended in the spacious parlours. The rooms were decorated with the choicest flowers. The bride is one of the Orange City's most attractive and accomplished young ladies and has many friends who extend hearty congratulations. After the ceremony a delicious wedding breakfast was served and later the couple were driven to the afternoon train, where a host of young people gathered and lavishly sprinkled them with rice and wished them godspeed. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens will reside at Sacramento.
