A. K. Steunenberg Succumbs to Complication of Diseases at Caldwell.
Dies Shortly Before Midnight--One of the Most Prominent Financiers of the State--Came to Caldwell in 1886--Led Active Life.
(Special Dispatch.)
CALDWELL, March 17.--Albert K. Steunenberg, one of the most
prominent financiers in the state and a brother of the late Frank Steunenberg, former governor of Idaho, died at his home here at a few minutes before 12 o'clock last night. His death was the result of a complication of diseases, chiefly chronic liver trouble, from which he had suffered some months. Mr. Steunenberg was one of the most prominent Odd Fellows in the state, having for many years held the honored position of secretary of the grand lodge of the state of Idaho. He was also prominently connected with the Knights of Pythias.
Mr. Steunenberg was a native of the state of Iowa, having been born in the town of Knoxville, that state, September 11, 1863. He received his education in his home town and later became a journeyman printer, coming to Caldwell in the year 1886. At that place he purchased the equipment of the "Tribune" and within a short time made out of it a successful and representative newspaper.
He was married in 1890 at Des Moines, Iowa, to Miss Carrie Coulter. In 1894 he became the cashier of the Commercial bank at Caldwell, which position he held up to the time of the organization of Caldwell Banking & Trust company, of which he became president. He has never sought public office, but on several occasions has served as member of the city council and as school trustee, after being urged to do so by his friends.
Mr. Steunenberg's integrity, his great genius for business and marvelous capacity for hard work have been instrumental in bringing Caldwell to the front as one of the live towns of the state and the citizens of his home town will look long for a man to take the place the decease (sic) has held in their respect and esteem.
He is survived by his wife and three young children; four brothers, Charles, William and John, of Caldwell, and Lieutenant George Steunenberg, military instructor at the state university at Moscow; two sisters, Mrs. Van Wyngarten and Miss Josephine Steunenberg, both of Caldwell.
Announcement of funeral arrangements will be made later.
