Longtime Tulelake resident Margaret Carrie Alcorn passed away in Englewood, Colo., on Sunday, Feb. 24, at
9 a.m. in Swedish Hospital. She was 88 years old.
Margaret was born July 11, 1924, in Alliance, Neb., to Fred and Carrie Sternberg. Her family remained in Alliance until she was 3 years old and then moved south to Liberal, Wyo. She remained in Wyoming until she was 12 when the family moved to Willow Creek, Ore. Mom went to school in Willow Creek and eventually to high school in Vale, Ore. She dropped out of high school at the end of her junior year to work with family on their farm. She married Hubert Lee Alcorn on Aug. 1, 1940, in Payette, Idaho. Mom was 16 when she married dad and too young to marry in Oregon. Mom and dad lived the lives of gypsies for the next two or three years, working on farms from Oregon into Southern California. In 1942-43 they moved to Tulelake and remained until 2005 when mom and dad moved to Willows, Calif., to live with mom's daughter. After dad passed, mom came to Colorado with her daughter and lived there until her passing.
Margaret Alcorn lived in Tulelake for 68 years. She ran a trucking business from home, started and ran a bakery, was part owner and operator of the Jolly Kone, was volunteer cook for schools and seniors, and was a basketball team chauffeur and cheerleader. Margaret earned a commercial driver's license and accompanied her husband for several years as a truck driver. Margaret was a great cook and enjoyed baking, knitting and crossword puzzles. Three years ago or so, Margaret moved to Colorado from Willows to be with family. She lived with her daughter Shirley for approximately two years and then in an assisted living home in Littleton, Colo., for about 15 months. Margaret was a devoted mother to Thomas, Shirley and Terry.
Survivors of Margaret include her children Thomas Alcorn of Littleton, Terry Alcorn of Tulelake, and daughter Shirley Mongini of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; grandchildren, including Cherie Ogden, Mindy Gallegos, Carrie Hanak, Kelly Mongini, Adam Alcorn, and Alex Alcorn; great-grandchildren, including Carson Ogden, Natasha Ogden, Adriana (Grace) Ogden, Hanna Gallegos, Theodore Gallegos, Tyler Hanak, and Chase Hanak; siblings, including her sister Mary Green of Chiloquin, Ore.
