Bettie is survived by the love of her life, her husband of almost 55 years, Jerry D. Byars Sr.; her children, Gean McCarter and her husband, Danny, Jerry "Doug" Byars Jr. and his wife Jane, Barbara Byars, David Byars and his wife Debbie; and her precious grandchildren, Stephen, Brittany, Melody and Isaac Byars and Alex McCarter.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Vivian Stephenson and her only sibling, James Stephenson Jr.
Bettie was a homemaker, retired church secretary where most of her career was at Larchmont Baptist Church, and tax advisor at H&R Block. A very active member of the church choir and many other activities until failing health, she loved to travel with friends and family. Her love for God and her family were the most important things in her life. Her home was always filled with love, food, laughter and great memories. She cherished nothing more than moments spent with her family and was a blessing to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. Even though she is gone, we will carry her in our hearts forever.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. in Brentwood Baptist Church with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Bettie requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to Brentwood Baptist Church, 8026 Old Ocean View, Norfolk, VA 23518.
Please visit her "Book of Memories" at www.graphamfuneralhome.com where you may leave a note to the family.
Graham Funeral Home, Chesapeake is in charge of arrangements. Well done, good and faithful servent!
