Last Rites Held Nov. 26th for Pioneer Citizen

On Wednesday evening at 7:50 o'clock on November 25th the beautiful life of Mrs. Mary Caroline Davis Staples came to a close after an illness of ten days.

Born in Kilmichael Community August 31, 1857, Mrs. Staples was one of the pioneer citizens of Montgomery County. She was the daughter of Dr. Joseph Josiah Davis, prominent physician and scholar coming from Louisiana to Black Hawk, Mississippi, where he married Emily Marshall Lane.

Mrs. Staples was married December 17, 1874, to John Anthony Quitman Staples, one of Montgomery County's prominent merchants and a civic and church leader, who preceded her in death April 17, 1918. Five children were born of this union, J. Q. Staples, Winona, J. D. Staples, Isola, Mrs. Johnson Rowe, Winona, W. B. Staples of Stewart and Hugh L. Staples who died in childhood. There are six grandchildren Mrs. R. L. Henderson, Arlington, Tenn., Mrs. Joest, Memphis, J. Q. Staples, III, in the Army, Johnston Staples Rowe, University of Texas, Mrs. Cleveland Jones, Inverness and Barbara Jean Staples, Stewart; three great-grandchildren, Raymond Henderson, Jr., Samuel Cornell Henderson and Carolyn Cassandra Jones. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Fannie Wilson and a brother, L. L. Davis, both of Kilmichael. In addition to her family and a large number of relatives Mrs. Staples leaves many sorrowing friends.

She was universally loved by all who knew her. During her active years she was a devoted church worker, being the first local president of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Johnston Rowe, in Winona at three o'clock Thursday afternoon, November 26th, conducted by her pastor the Rev. R. S. Lowe assisted by the Rev. Joseph Flowers of the Baptist Church. Interment was in Friendship cemetery, Kilmichael.
