CAPE ELIZABETH -- Margaret M. "Peggy" Blair, 76, died peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.
She was born in Gardiner on March 6, 1929, the daughter of Horace F. and Katherine A. Hickey Staples.
Peggy attended Grant Street Grammar School in Farmingdale and graduated in 1946 from Gardiner High School, where she was active in many sports, band, orchestra, drama club and cheerleading. She was choir organist at St. Joseph Church in Gardiner for four years during high school. She attended LaSalle Junior College in Massachusetts, where she participated in organ concerts and was a member of the Orphean Club, which sang with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from Our Lady of Mercy College (now St. Joseph College in Windham) in 1951. She was a substitute teacher in Gardiner and Portland. In 1951, she married George A. Blair. They lived in several cities and states including Portland; Gardiner; Cape Elizabeth; Holliston, Mass.; and Clifton Park, N.Y. Upon returning to Cape Elizabeth in 1974, she worked eight years at the Maine Department of Transportation in Scarborough.
Peggy was a member of St. Bartholomew Church in Cape Elizabeth and was a member of its choir for several years. Peggy enjoyed many hobbies, especially arts and crafts, painting with all her "buddies." She sold much of her work at craft shows in the local area. She loved good music and enjoyed playing the piano and the organ. She and her husband loved playing bridge with their many wonderful friends.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 53 years, George A. Blair, formerly of Cape Elizabeth and now of Freeport; son Thomas F. Blair and wife Donna Parks of Portland; daughter Holly A. McGuiness and husband Jim of East Boothbay; daughter Katherine A. Coker and husband Jerry of McDonough, Ga.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Thomas F. Staples and his wife, Margaret, of Gardiner; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by an infant son; her mother and father, Kate and Jim Staples; and a sister, Elizabeth A. Mullin.
Peg and her family would like to extend a special thanks to the many doctors and nurses who so caringly treated her during the past several years.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at St. Bartholomew's Church, Cape Elizabeth. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Gardiner, at a later date.
