Balfour Staples
Funeral services were held here on January 14 for William Balfour Staples, a retired railroader. Mr. Staples died January 13 at his residence Church Street. He was 76 years old.
A native of Montgomery County, Mr. Staples was a graduate of Winona High School and attended Southwestern Presbyterian University in Clarksdale, Tennessee.
He was in high school and college days an avid baseball enthusiast and was pitcher for the Winona baseball team that won the state championship in the early 1900's. His team won an astounding 59 games in a row.
Mr. Staples also achieved considerable fame over the years for being a member of the first football team in Mississippi. The Winona team for which he played halfback met Yazoo City in 1905 for the state championship. He was the first of the four original backs to die. The group met just this past fall for a sixty year reunion.
Following his college years, Mr. Staples was employed by the railroad and after his retirement several years ago, he continued to make his home in Winona.
Services were held for him at 2 p.m. January 14 at the Lee Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Taylor Ballard officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery, Lee Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Staples was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was married to the former Willie Mathews who died a few years ago.
He leaves his daughter, Mrs. Barbara Cantacuzene of Winona and a brother, Davis Staples of Inverness.
Pallbearers were Floyd Pinkerton, Forrest Heath, Terry Brown, W.W. Jenkins, John McNamara and Andrew Bailey.
