Byron was the sixth child (of seven) of U.S. Congressman and attorney William Stanbery (1788-1873) and wife Mary Shippley (1789-1873). Although many of his family were lawyers, doctors and/or land speculators, Byron chose a life of farming for himself. He was a bachelor and a life-long resident of Newark. He is buried next to his sister Mary, and they share the same monument. They are buried with the rest of their family in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
