Dr. Sarah Spruill Armstrong, EDD,left our world suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, August 24, 2016. Despite valiant efforts by staff at Augusta Health's Fitness Center and by the Emergency Room medical team, she was unable to recover after collapsing following her regular exercise class.

She is survived by her loving spouse, Stuart C. Armstrong; their four children, Adam N. Spruill, Desiree N. Armstrong, Jacqueline B. Armstrong, and John W. Armstrong III; and two grandsons, Andrew J. Spruill and Ashton W-V. Spruill. She is also survived by her mother, Marjorie Nash Reidhead; two sisters, The Rev. Virginia R. Teitt and Julia A. Reidhead; and three brothers, Paris W. Reidhead, James D. Reidhead, and David C. Reidhead.

She was pre-deceased by her father, The Reverend Paris W. Reidhead.

Sarah led full and productive family, professional, religious, and social lives,and was an accomplished educator, author, and musician.She received her undergraduate and master's Lynchburg College and her doctorate in education from the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education.When she retired from her 33 year career in the Virginia Public School system,she left an indelible footprint within the regional, state, and national education communities.After retiring from public school administration, she started her own business, Leading and Learning Solutions, LLC.,an educational consulting firm,through which she led local and national seminars, workshops, and coaching on the application of brain research to instructional improvement. At her death, she was also the Director of the Master of Arts in Education program at Eastern Mennonite University, where she taught graduate courses related to brain research and oversaw their programs in Restorative Justice.

Her wide-ranging and distinguished career in education spanned positions in the Virginia Public School System, including elementary principal and assistant superintendent, and Senior Director of Professional Development at UVA's School for Continuing Education. She played a pivotal role in the development of the SCOPE program (Statewide Communities of Practice in Education Excellence) at UVA. She served as president of the Virginia Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.She was the author of two influential books on neuroscience and pedagogy, Teaching Smarter with the Brain in Focus, and A Practical Guide to Tiering Instruction in the Differentiated Classroom.

Sarah was an active member and elder at Rockfish Presbyterian Church, where she was integrally involved in its Music and Mission Ministries,including five Youth Mission trips with her son, John to Mexico and Guatemala. Music was her passion, in addition to singing in the Rockfish church choir, she was a member of MIRA, a vocal ensemble that performed Early Modern music in such distinguished venues as Williamsburg's historic Bruton Parish Church and Washington National Cathedral's Evensong service.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m.on Saturday, September 3, 2016,at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church(RPC)at 5016 Rockfish Valley Hwy, Nellysford, VA 22958. A reception will follow at the Rockfish Valley Community Center at 190 Rockfish School Lane in Afton, VA, 22920.In lieu of flowers,please send a donation to RPC in Sarah's name for its Mission and/or Music Ministries.
