Virginia Mitchell, 77, Avon, Route 1, died Friday, March 28 at 8:27 a.m. in St. Mary's Hospital in Galesburg. She was the daughter of Joseph and Valentine Stirn Spitz of Alsace Lorraine, France. Virginia was born in San Francisco, Calif. on Dec. 8, 1902. After the San Francisco earthquake, she moved with her family to Alaska and later to Georgetown, Washington. In 1923 she married Russell Mitchell and came to Marshalltown, Iowa until 1926 when she moved to her home near Avon.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her husband Russell; one son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Ruby Allen Mitchell of Avon; three granddaughters, Anita Mitchell, Dwight, Ill., Linda Hunter, Avon, and Carol O'Rourke, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and three great grandchildren, Kirk Hunter, Avon, Erin O'Rourke and Michael O'Rourke, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Six brothers and sisters also survive; Louise Fox and Elsie Verner of Seattle, Washington, Anna Weyant, Huntington Park, Calif., Victor Spitz, Scramento, Calif., John Spitz, Los Angeles, Calif., and Alfred Spitz, Carmichael, Calif. She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Spitz.
Virginia Mitchell was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church, its Ludian class, the Avon Nursing Home Auxiliary, and the Pleasant Ridge Community Club.
Funeral services were Monday, March 31 at 1 p.m. at the Abingdon Christian Church, with burial in Avon Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Milton Selph, Raymond Tolbert, Earl Mitchell, Jr., Dan Boone, David Serven, Frank McClure and Joe Rankin. Honorary pallbearers were: J. O. Dempsey, Leonard Fidler, Lynn Davis, Clarence Combs, Glen Utsinger, and Wayne Reynolds. Rosetta Holloway and Evelyn Rankin were flower ladies. Memorials were made to the Abingdon Christian Church.
