. Charles O. Spear III of Suffield Dies
. Charles O. Spear III, a member of the Suffield Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years, died Thursday at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. He was 56.
. Spear, a mechanical engineer who worked for the Hamilton Standard Division of United Technologies for 31 years until his retirement last year, lived at 236 N. Main St., Suffield.
. He was a member of the Suffield Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years, having been honored as "Fireman of the Year" in 1956, and had served as president of the Suffield Firemen's Association in 1975.
. Spear was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Suffield, and had also been a member of the church vestry.
. He was a member of Apollo Lodge 59 AF&AM, Suffield, and an Army veteran of World War II. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Lt. Charles O. Spear IV, U.S. Navy, stationed with the NAS Oceana at Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Amy L. Ruzbasan of Suffield; a brother, Willis M. Spear of South Portland, Maine.
. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m., in Calvary Episcopal Church, Bridge Street, Suffield, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Suffield, with full military honors. His family will receive friends Sunday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St., Suffield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UConn Health Center Foundation, Division of Gastroenterology, Farmington 06032, or to the Church Building Fund, 145 Bridge St., Suffield.
