M. Elizabeth "Betty" Sorensen passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, in West Bloomfield, Mich. She was preceded in death by her husband, Niels E. Sorensen; and brothers, James and Joseph Burrow.

She is survived by children, David Marold (Sheila York), Northville, Mich., and Sharyl Gliva (Michael), Longmont, Colo.; and grandchildren, Christopher Marold (Shannon), Berkley, Mich., Erick Marold (Marisa), West Bloomfield, and Kevin Marold (Samantha), Portland, Ore., Eric Gliva (Andrea) Loveland, Colo., and Samuel (Naomi) Gliva, Loveland; great-granddaughters, Elena Gliva and Noelle Marold; her older brother, Francis Burrow in Ruislip, England; and nieces, nephews and cousins in England, Australia, the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Betty was born March 2, 1921, in London, England, to Eunice Bayley Burrow and Henry Maurice Burrow. From her mother, she learned gardening, love of people and a sense of style. From her father she also learned a love of life and people, the importance of religion and prayer as well as helping the less advantaged. Betty worked for the British government and in banking after graduation and worked as an air raid shelter coordinator in World War II, surviving the bombing of London and her parents' garage. She was engaged briefly to a Royal Air Force pilot who was killed defending London. She later met Fredrick Marold from Iowa serving in the Army Air Corps and they were married on Aug. 16, 1946, in Waterloo, Iowa. They had two sons, David and William. Shortly after his birth, William died of the RH Blood Factor. After that Betty participated in a research study that confirmed a solution to the problem that would save babies who had this condition. Betty was an active volunteer in Waterloo with the Red Cross and became secretary of the Junior League. Betty and Fred later divorced.

Betty moved to Oak Park and worked for a number of companies, including Encyclopedia Britannica, where she became supervisor of the Customer Service Department and another British company, Teasmade, where she was district manager responsible for demonstrations. On Nov. 2, 1965, she married Niels Sorensen in Oak Park. Later they moved to Wood Dale, Downers Grove and ultimately built their dream home in Algonquin when they were in their mid-sixties. They became involved in conservation and politics in Algonquin, and Niels was elected to office. Betty continued to live there after Niels died on Oct. 11, 2010, until December 2012 when she moved to Michigan after a stroke to be near her son, grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, in the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin, IL 60102.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Living Grace Community Church, 1500 Silver Lake Road, Cary, IL 60013, 847-639-7566 with Pastor Dr. Donald Erickson officiating. After the service, burial will be at Acacia Park Cemetery, 7800 W. Irving Park Road, Norridge.
