Martha graduated from Taylorsville High School. She could play the piano and went to Bethel College in Western Kentucky. She taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Spencer Co., KY.
She married Ralph Bennett Carrithers around 1938 in Taylorsville, Spencer County, Kentucky. Martha and Ralph made their home in Madisonville, KY. Ralph was drafted in to the Army and served in the South Pacific for several years. Martha's father, Rufus died about the same time and she came back to Taylorsville and lived with her mother during the War. She worked as the Secretary of the Draft Board in Spencer County, Kentucky. After the War, Martha and Ralph moved back to Madisonville, KY to live.
Marth and Ralph had their first and only son in 1947 and named him simply, R.B. Carrithers. Because the name caused problems, they later named him Ralph Bennett Carrithers, Jr. but he was still known as R.B.
Ralph died in the 1950's, which left Martha a widow and R.B. fatherless. Martha and R.B. continued to live in Madisonville until R.B. graduated from high school. After his graduation, Martha married Archie Hornbeck. They lived in Fern Creek, KY. Archie died after a long illness leaving Martha again a widow.
She died April 17, 1999 in Louisville, Jefferson County, KY.
