Birth: Jan. 6, 1912
Death: Jun. 4, 1997

Anchorage Daily News June 6, 1997

Anchorage resident Arnold Smith died of complications of Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease June 4, 1997, at Columbia Alaska Regional Hospital. He was 85. A funeral was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown. The Rev. Marvin Owen of First Baptist Church officiated. Burial followed at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 6, 1912, in Redtop, Mo. Originally coming to Alaska as a young man, he later returned in 1956 with his family. He worked for the White Alice Dew Line Project and Federal Aviation Administration, retiring in 1975. He returned to San Mateo, Calif., and was active in his church, First Baptist Church of San Mateo. In 1991, Mr. Smith returned to Anchorage to be near his daughters and their families. Before his death, Mr. Smith resided at Chugiak Senior Center and Golden Years Retirement Home. Mr. Smith enjoyed going to church and wrote daily in his journal. Although not published, his book ''Travels With A Cloud,'' the story of a young man's journey in his relationship with Jesus Christ, was a family treasure. His grandchildren fondly remember him preparing their favorite breakfast of lumpy oatmeal, ''just the way we like it,'' and riding the vacation Bible school bus with his eldest grandson. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jeanne.

He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Klemmer and Jennifer Deitz of Anchorage; grandchildren, Justin, Jennifer and Brian Meyers and Steven Klemmer of Anchorage; step-grandchildren, Cindy Deitz, Donna McLearen and Deidre Aanonson of Anchorage; brother, Carl of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 240 E. Tudor Road, Suite 110, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements are by Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
