QUINCY - Robert L. Smith, 77, a retired chief petty officer with more than 50 years of service in the Navy, died Friday in Quincy City Hospital after a brief illness.
Born and educated in Wesson, Miss., Mr. Smith was a resident of Quincy for the last 50 years.
He was a chief petty officer for 30 years and later served for 20 years as a civilian employee at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. While in the Navy, he served on 21 vessels, including the USS California, the USS Wasp and several submarines.
He received many medals, including the Yangtse Service Medal, the China Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, a Silver Star and the United Nations Service Medal.
After retiring from the Navy in 1957 he began working as a boiler plant engineer at the South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Upon his retirement from the air station in 1979, he was awarded a 50-year federal service award.
Mr. Smith leaves his wife, Kathleen J. (Flavin); a daughter, Kathleen R. Davis of Braintree; a sister, Gladys Calamia of New Orleans; and two grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Quincy. Burial will be in Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy.
