From the Garnett Journal-Plaindealer, June 10, 1910.

Allen H. Smith was born at Arkwright Center, New York, February 17, 1859. He came with his parents to Lee Center, Michigan, when a child, and there grew to manhood. In 1888 he came to Anderson County, and here resided until his death May 3, 1910. He leaves a wife and four small children who deeply mourn his death. His mother, a sister and three brothers survive him. During his residence in Anderson County, Mr.Smith made many sincere friends who appreciated his sterling qualities and regret his early death.

My great-grandmother, Clara Huffman Smith, had four young children to care for. Allen and Clara didn't marry until they were 37 & 38 years old. (Marriage certificate is on file at Jackson County Missouri.). My grandfather was born almost a year later. Edward "Bruce" Smith, was only ten years old at the time his father passed and was too young to work the farm. Clara moved to Sugar Creek, Missouri and owned a substantial bit of land near the Standard Oil refinery. They raised cows there. Clara is burried in Independence, Missouri at Mount Washington Cemetery. The other children were known as Allen, Arvid and Wilma.
