Mrs. Paul Schenk Sr. was found dead in bed at her home in Nauvoo Thursday, April 12, 1951, at 5:00 a.m., death being attributed to heart disease. Mrs. Schenk was in her apparently good health previous to her death, although she had received medical treatment the previous afternoon. Her sudden death came as a shock to the family and her many friends and relatives.
Laura Miriam Smith, daughter of Hiram and Edith Smith, was born in Perry, Nebraska, on February 19, 1881, and was married to Paul Schenk at Los Angeles, Calif., on November 1, 1904. After residing in California for several years they came to Nauvoo, which has since been their home. Mrs. Schenk was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic church and of the Rosary society.
Surviving are her husband; one son, Paul H. Schenk; five daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Zoeller and Mrs. Mary Pinar of Wells, Mich.; Mrs. Anna Long of Indianapolis, Ind.; Miss Edith Schenk of Mt. Prospect, Ill.and Miss Ethel Schenk at home; a brother, Earl Smith, of Perry, Neb., and twelve grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sons; Ferdinand, Joseph and Leo Schenk, who lost his life in the Philippines during World War II, while a prisoner of the Japanese.
Mrs. Schenk was a gracious lady, beloved by her family and a large circle of friends.
The Rosary was recited at the Sharman funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m. and funeral services were held in SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic church Saturday morning at 9:00 o'clock with the Rev. E.P. Seidel, pastor of Sacred Heart church of Fort Madison, officiating. Interment was in SS.Peter and Paul's cemetery. The pall-bearers were Carl and Leo Haas, Carl and Meryl Schenk, Henry Herbert and Marion Anderson.
Attending the funeral from out of town were Nick Pinar and family and Mrs. Gertrude Zoeller of Wells, Mich.; James L. Long and family of Indianapolis, Ind., and Miss Edith Schenk of Mt. Prospect, Ill.
