"Snuffy" Smith of King, N.C., formerly of Springdale, passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, in King, N.C.
He was born Joe Stanley Smith on Feb. 10, 1945, in Fayetteville, to Max Holland Smith of the Brush Creek community and Pauline McCamey Smith of the Harmon community.
He graduated Littleton High School in Colorado. He was a former lieutenant for the Springdale Fire Department. He owned Snuffy's String Shoppe in Springdale and King, N.C. He played locally with the Moonhull Mountain Boys, the Bluegrass Gazette, Frankie Kelly and High Country and later with Zeke Saunders and the Blades of Grass, and Wood and Steel in North Carolina.
He was an entrepreneur, developing the Hyperdrive RC race car and gun parts used by the U.S. military for the 45 automatic. He was best known as a luthier and set up man, a true Banjo Whisperer. The Snuffy Smith Banjo Bridge is used worldwide. In addition to his love of the music business, he was an avid water sportsman, building and racing his first hydroplane at age 15. He was a dune buggy builder and enthusiast and champion Bianci marksmen. He was a ham radio operator and a licensed pilot.
In 1966, he married the love of his life, Jacquelyn Robinson of Springdale, his partner in every adventure.
He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn of King; his mother, Pauline McCamey Smith Miller; his brother, Bob R. Smith and wife, Debby; his sister, Peggy Smith Birkes, all of Tulsa; his nephew, Scott D. Smith of Denver, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Wesley, Troy and Doyle Robinson; sisters-in-law, Enola Bunton and Cheryl Herrington; and many more adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.
Local services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Westfield Chapel Funeral Home in Springdale with interment at Elm Springs Cemetery.
