Funeral service for MAJ (Retired) Calvin E. Smith, 69, Lawton, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church. Major Smith died Wednesday, November 9, in Lawton. Burial with full military honors will be in the Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

Calvin was born February 17, 1942 in Urih, Alabama, to Ennis Calvin and Ruby C. (Hayes) Smith. He grew up in Alabama and later moved to Pensacola, Florida, where he graduated high school. He married Nancy Littlefield on December 11, 1963 at Phoenix City, Alabama.

Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 21 years on active duty, retiring on May 31, 1981 at Fort Sill. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Service Stars, Bronze Star Medal with V Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, One Overseas Service Bar, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with Eighth Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm,

meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Sharpshooter Badge (rifle M-16) and the Expert Sharpshooter Badge (rifle M-14).

Following his retirement he opened the "Trophy Shop" on Sheridan road and in 1986 purchased "Grave-A-Name II" which he renamed "Engraving Smith of Lawton". It was also around that same time period that he began working for Air Tech which was later purchased by Telos Federal Systems and is currently known as CGI. Calvin also had purchased "C&H Pipe Shop" which was located in the Central Mall and changed the name to "Beans & Briar" and would relocate the business to its current location on C Avenue. At the time of his death Calvin was employed by CGI and had sold his businesses to his children.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lawton Rotary West, the Masonic Lodge and the Good Sam's RV Club.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; a daughter and son in law, Tina and Larry Brame, Lawton; a son and daughter in law, Phillip and Kimber Smith, Lawton; six grandchildren and their spouses, Hilary and James Levenson, Lawton, Megan and Chase Deavours, Lawton, Lacy Brame, Norman, Logan Dye, Lawton, Colton Smith, Lawton, and Carleigh Smith, Lawton; three great grandchildren, Jack Levenson, Kinsley Deavours and Silas Levenson; two brothers and sisters in law, Nathan A. and Elaine Smith, Pensacola, Florida, and Richard and Gwen Smith, Frost Proof, Florida.

His parents and a sister, Alma Smith, preceded him in death.

The family will greet friends from 3-5 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
