Norfolk - Rita Smith Carter, 90, passed away on January 6, 2016. Rita was born in Washington, D.C. and resided most of her life in Norfolk, Virginia. She retired as a secretary from the Norfolk Public School System. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, St. Pius Women's Club, Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus #367, Tidewater Quilters Guild and the Wedgewood Garden Club.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-nine years Josiah G. Carter; five children J. George Carter, (Cindy) James Philip Carter, (Jeannette) Beth Hanson, (John) Mary Lorson, (Montgomery) and Margie Hand, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norview Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 9, 11:00a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
