Death of John P. Smith
John P. Smith, the third child of Stephen and Mary Smith, was born on the old Smith farm near Walnut Grove school house on South Bear Creek, July 8, 1845, and died at the home of his son, Wyatt, in Wright City, August 25, 1920, aged 75 years, 1 month and 17 days. He was of a family of five children all of whom preceded him to the home beyond the river, except one sister, Mrs. Mattie Craighead, who resides near Fulton. Three of this family have passed away within the last seven months. His eldest brother, W.W. Smith of Wellsville, his sister, Mrs. W.Y. Sisk of Montgomery, also one nephew, Elton Sisk of Wellsville.
About 45 years ago Mr. Smith was married to Miss Etta Moser. To this union seven children were born, five of whom preceded their father to the grave, also his dear wife. He is survived by one son, Wyatt H. Smith, of Wright City, also five grandchildren, one sister and many relatives and dear friends.
Mr. Smith lived most of his life in Montgomery County. He was a kind, devoted husband and father, and was highly esteemed by his many friends.
Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant Baptist church near High Hill Thursday, August 26 at 3 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. R.E. McQuie and his body laid to rest in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
