DOWAGIAC - Ada M. Butler, 92, died Wednesday, April 1st, in the Cass County Medical Care Facility after an extended illness. She was born August 17, 1916, in Vandalia, MI, to the late Henry and Mamie (Long) Smeltzer. She married Glenn Hartzell on June 5, 1937, and he preceded her in death on April 12, 1962. She then married Carl Butler on July 18, 1970, and he preceded her in death on May 14, 1986. She is survived by a daughter, Eunice (Richard) Bell of Dowagiac; a son, Louis (Georgia) Hartzell of Three Rivers, MI; a stepdaughter, Julia (Bob) Mallo; and a stepdaughter-in-law, Diane Butler. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Martin (Lauri) Hartzell, Glenn (Jenni) Hartzell, Rene Chamberlin, Denise (Dennis) Juday, Daryl (Valerie) Kessler, Jason (Kerri) Bell and Robert (Lynley) Bell; 11 great-grandchildren, Justin Hartzell, Nicholas Hartzell, Brandon Hartzell, Jake Hartzell, Kylie Chamberlin, Trevor Chamberlin, Travis Chamberlin, Jeremy Juday, Jordan Juday, Alexis Kessler and Madelyn Bell; and numerous step-grand and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Harold Butler, seven sisters and two brothers. Ada had worked in the housekeeping department at the Three Rivers Area Hospital for a number of years. She had attended the Pleasant View Church of Christ in Cassopolis, and also at the First Christian Church in Dowagiac. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She enjoyed doing crossword and word search puzzles, playing bingo and cards with her friends and family, and enjoyed going to the Cass County Council on Aging in Cassopolis. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Connelly Funeral Home, Cassopolis. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Settle, retired pastor of the Pleasant View Church of Christ. Interment will be at Plum Grove Cemetery, Union, MI. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1 p.m. until the service. Memorials may be made to the Cass County Council on Aging, Cassopolis.
