Ethel S. Schlosnagle, age 84, of Carlisle, died November 6, 2005 at Thornwald Home, Carlisle.
She was born April 8, 1921 in Cumberland, MD, a daughter of Almeda Smeltzer, and was raised by two great-aunts, Flora and Margaret Mahaney.
She received her RN degree from Memorial Hospital in Cumberland and a Master's degree in Public Health from Columbia University, New York City. She was a public health nurse in Cumberland until 1946, when she married Eugene (Gene) Schlosnagle.
She had been active in church and community events. She was a 53 year member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she had sung in the choir, served as a deacon, was the treasurer of the women's association, was in charge of wedding receptions. She loved doing skits and plays in church. She also volunteered at the United Way and the Acoustic Neuroma Association. For a number of years, she taught Red Cross swimming lessons at the Carlisle Swim Club.
She loved to travel. She, along with her husband and daughters, took three trips around the United States and throughout Canada of four, seven and eight weeks respectively. In addition to visiting all 50 states, she and her family took trips to the Middle East and Europe of six weeks each. She and her husband continued traveling abroad, with 12 more trips, visiting a total of 70 countries and four South Pacific Islands. On all of these trips, and around home, her husband took print and slide pictures. They have more than 8,000 slides and 2,000 prints, which Ethel labeled.
She was also interested in crafts and art. She took lessons and became a good amateur painter. She liked sewing and made dresses for the daughters and drapes for the windows. She knitted sweaters, crocheted a table cloth, and braided rugs.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Eugene; two daughters, Carol Bradford of Alexandria, VA, and Jane Cowden of Newville and her husband, William.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, November 11th at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church, Garland Drive, Carlisle.
