Services Held In First Ward Chapel

Alfred T. Smedley, 70, a former Dingle and Montpelier resident died at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday in the University of Utah Hospital, Salt Lake City, following an extended illness. He was born April 6, 1895 in Paris, a son of Frank E. and Frances Sparks Smedley. An active member of the LDS Church, he fulfilled a mission in the southern states.

While at Montpelier he was employed in the yards of the Union Pacific Railroad and by Arrowhead Freightlines when in Salt Lake City. The family moved to Salt Lake City in July 1944.

Mr. Smedley and Grace B. Perkins were married March 26, 1918 in the LDS Temple Salt Lake City. Besides his widow, he is survived by two children, Ralph A. Smedley of Bountiful and Mrs. Ernest R. (Ann Marie) Nelson of Salt Lake City, four grandchildren, two brothers, Edward Smedley of Dingle, and William E. Smedley of Los Angeles and one sister, Mrs. Leslie Nate of Dingle.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Montpelier LDS First Ward Chapel with Bishop Val Rich conducting. The invocation was offered by J. Warren Sirrine, obituary, Bishop Rich; vocal solo, “The Lord’s Prayer by Max Haddock, speakers, C. N. Sparks and Bishop Alvin Tueller; vocal solo, Mrs. Walter Hunzeker; benediction, Cowley Jacobsen, prayer at the mortuary, Clarence Swensen; prelude and postlude, Mrs. Royal D. Clark.

Interment was in the Montpelier cemetery and the grave was dedicated by Bishop Rich. Pallbearers were Sherman Burgoyne, Robert Nate, Dean Cook, Durwood Perkins, Max Hanson, and Charles Brown. Matthews Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
