EAST LIVERPOOL - Sydna I. Smallwood Watson, who along with her family, owned and operated the Tropic Shoppe for many years, passed away at her home on the Y & O Road in East Liverpool at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014. Sydna, who was 86, had been battling illness for quite some time and was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

She was born in Kentucky on Jan. 31, 1927, a daughter of the late Marshall and Dora Fields Smallwood. A member of the Word of Life Chapel in Wellsville, her faith was very important to her. While much of her time was devoted to the family business, Sydna also enjoyed reading her bible and her time with her church friends.

Preceding her in death on March 21, 2006, was her husband, John M. Watson, whom she married on May 14, 1959.

Sydna leaves behind four daughters and four sons: Deborah Davidson and her husband, Fred, of Steubenville; Connie Rose and her husband, Kenneth, of Anderson, Ind.; Tammy Heddleston of East Liverpool; Kimberly Sue Michael and her husband, David, of Negley; Duane Blaner and his wife, Wanda, of Lisbon; Bruce Watson and his wife, Terry, of Tennessee; Fred Watson and his wife, Dixie, of Olean, N.Y.; and John Watson and his wife, Marie, of Gallipolis, Ohio.

A son, Mickey Lee Watson, passed away in 1992.

There are 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a sister, Ruby Milliron of Wellsville, and two brothers, Marshall Smallwood and his wife Patricia of Wellsville, and Crit Smallwood and his wife Donna of Salem.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.

Burial will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery.
