Eliza J. Skinner Flowers, the daughter of Japhet Skinner and his first wife Mary Ann Obenchain, was born February 11, 1848 in Ohio County, Kentucky. Her mother was born 1816-17 in Virginia, and died on February 28, 1853 in Ohio County, Kentucky. The Japhet Skinner family appeared in District 2, Household # 641 in the 1850 Census of Ohio County, Kentucky. At that time the family consisted of: Japhet, a 48 year old farmer, born in Virginia; his wife Mary A., 34, born in Kentucky; and their Kentucky-born children: William, 9; Amos, 6; Asa, 5; Eliza, 3, and Charles F., 4 months.

Eliza J. Skinner was the first wife of Samuel Flowers, the son of Valentine and Evaline (Unknown) Flowers, who was born on July 15, 1842 in Kentucky. According to the 1880 Census of Pellville, Hancock County, Kentucky both his and Eliza's parents had been born in Virginia. At the time the census was taken Samuel was a 37 year old farmer. His family consisted of his wife, Eliza J., age 32, born in Kentucky, and their Kentucky-born children: Stephen, 14; Mary, 11; Carrie, 10; Amos, 7; and Orrin, age 1. There may have been other children born of this marriage after 1880.

Eliza J. Skinner Flowers died at the age of 45 years and 22 days on March 5, 1893 in Patesville, Hancock County, Kentucky. She was buried in the Panther Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Herbert, Ohio County, Kentucky where her parents were buried. After Eliza's death, Samuel married her unmarried step-sister, Mary Ann Skinner, on June 21, 1894. Mary Ann had the same father, Japheth Skinner. who was born 1816-17 in Virginia and died Feb. 28, 1853 in Ohio County, Kentucky. Mary Ann's mother was Nancy Barnett who married Japheth Skinner July 29, 1853 in Hancock County.
