Frances Sidney
Birth: unknown
Death: Mar. 8, 1589

English Aristocracy. Born the seventh and youngest child of Anne Packenham and Sir William Sidney, who served as Edward VI's Chamberlain. A devout Protestant, she was a friend of and served as a Lady in Waiting to Princess Elizabeth - later Elizabeth I. In April 1555, she became the second wife of Thomas Radcliffe who would become Lord Deputy of Ireland and Lord President of the Council of the North in 1556 and Earl of Sussex on his father's death in 1557. She was appointed one of Queen Elizabeth's Ladies of the Bedchamber. She became a passionate Puritan in later life. On her death at age 58, she bequeathed some 5000 to endow a new college at Cambridge, to be called the Lady Frances Sussex College. Her nephew was the poet Sir Philip Sidney. (bio by: Iola)
