Eliza Ellen Shoup was born in Piqua Co., Ohio, September 18, 1841 and at an early age
moved to Logan Co. Illinois. At an age of 14 she united with the Christian church and
remained a devout member of that church throughout the remainder of her life.
On September 16, 1867 she was united in marriage to Samuel Anstine, a veteran of the
Civil War, at Lincoln. Ill. To this union were born 10 children, five of who died in
infancy. In 1883 they moved from Illinois to Cowley County, Kansas near Geuda
Springs. They resided here December of 1910 when they moved to Peckham where the
husband died June 15, 1913.
In July 1915, Mrs. Anstine moved to Arkansas City and resided with her daughter at
1201 South Third Street; there she departed this life December 15, 1928, at the age of 87
years two months and 27 days.
She leaves to survive her four sons, Virgil G. of Pond Creek; Adam E. of Geuda
Springs; Fred L. of Peckham and Winfred S. of Chilhowee, MO one Daughter Mrs. Effie
Richards of Arkansas City; one brother Lewis Shoup of Meadville, MO; also 21
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.
All of the children were with her at the time of her death with the exception of her
youngest son, Winfred S. of Chilhowee, Mo who was unable to reach here until after her
death. She was laid to rest beside her husband at Mercer Cemetery near Arkansas City
December 18th.
