Secretary had talent for knitting and sewing
Bertha A. "Bert" Auten, age 69, of Beaver Valley, died on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, a resident of Grandview Health Homes in Danville since October.
Bert was born on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1942, in York, a daughter of the late Arthur Clayton and Arnetta Ima (Clark) Shoup. Bert graduated from the Red Lion Area School. She was employed throughout her working career as a secretary for many companies in the Bloomsburg area. She was employed by Tax Service Plus, Collins Insurance Agency and also Sears at the Columbia Mall for over 13 years. She attended the Hargers Reformed Church in the Beaver Valley area. She was also a 4-H equine leader in Columbia County, the Horse and Pony Club, the POA Club and also show secretary for the Keystone Palomino Club. Bert had an enormous talent for knitting and sewing many crafts and costumes. Her children and grandchildren will always remember the many types of costumes she would create for their horse and pony showings and parades. Bert will be sadly missed also by her favorite Jack Russell Terrier, "Chase."
Surviving is her beloved husband of 51 years, David R. Auten; a son: Steven G. Auten and wife, Lillie, also of Beaver Valley; a daughter, Mary Meek and husband, Nathan, of Stillwater; three grandchildren: Stevi R. Auten, Bethany R. Meek and Trevor E. Meek; four brothers: Arthur Shoup and wife, Mary Jane, of York; John Shoup of Catawissa; Irvin Shoup Sr. and wife, Glenna, of Catawissa; and Glen Shoup and wife, Dorthea, of Spokane, Wash.; a step-brother: Mike Shoup and wife, Tammy, of York; and a step-sister: Jane Taylor and husband, Ronald, also of York; as well as many nephews and nieces.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 6-8 p.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., 745 Market at Eighth Street, Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will begin on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m. from the Allen Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. Thomas J. Fetterolf officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow in Lime Ridge. Memorial contributions in Bert's honor are suggest to Animal Resource Center, c/o Linda Bird, 301A Boone Road, Bloomsburg.
