Born near Earlville, NY. Daughter of Nelson F. & Jennie G. (Chapin) Sholes, wife of Charles H. Auten, Sr., m. Aug 1, 1912. Buried May 31, 1940.
MRS. CHAS. AUTEN BURIED HERE SUNDAY
Funeral services were held Friday morning May 31, at Oak Park fro Mrs. Charles Auten, former Princeville resident, who died at her home in Oak Park, Tuesday, May 28. Rev Lee H. Smith of the Princeville Presbyterian church held graveside services at the Princeville cemetery Friday afternoon at the Princeville cemetery where the deceased was buried.
Mrs. Gertrude Sholes Auten was born on the home farm near Earlville, N.Y., on July 2, 1878 of Nelson and Jennie Chapin Sholes. The family lived at different time on the farm and in Syracuse. She was graduated from Vermont Academy, Saxton's River, Vermont, in 1900 and fro Syracuse university in 1904, then teaching in the schools in Brushton and Malane, N. Y. Upon the death of her father in 1907 she successfully managed the large farm until she could dispose of it. The family then moved to Boston and Mrs. Auten studied Scientific Management in Simmons College, utilizing her training at the Plympton Press, Norwood, Mass.
On August 1, 1912 she was married to Charles H. Auten, living in Princeville until December 1927. Here Mrs. Auten was active in civic affairs for several years being the school board superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday school and holding other offices.
Mrs. Auten loved the beautiful and exceptional creature and artistic ability. She studied at the New Bauhaus, the school of Design. She also loved the out-of-doors, and often took her three sons during their childhood on long camping trips.
She died after a four day illness on May 28, 1940 of a heart attack leaving besides her husband, three sons, Phillip Sholes, Howard Leavenworth and Charles H. Auten, Jr. and a sister, Bertha, wife of Dr. Josiah H. Brown of West Newton, Mass. Services in Oak Park were conducted by her pastor, Dr. Albert Buckner Coe of the First Congregational church.
Relatives attending the services besides her husband and sons from other point s were Lydia Armstrong of Urbana; Peter Auten of Champaign; Louis Auten of Oak Park and his sons Lawrence and Allen; Mrs. Stanford Auten and son Jon of Oak Park; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Auten and son Don of Indianapolis; Miss Anna Oakes of Maywwod; Miss Robah Kellogg of Wheaton College; Mr. and Mrs. Forest Oakes and Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Oakes of Laura.
