Ruby B. Alcott, 99
CUMBERLAND – Ruby Bernice Sholes Alcott, 99, of Cumberland, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Ruby was born in St. George on Aug. 3, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Emma Taylor Sholes. She lived in Tenants Harbor until the age of three when the family moved to South Portland. Ruby graduated from South Portland High School and took classes at an evening school thereafter.
After high school, she worked at Filene's Department Store in Portland as a gift wrapper. It was here where she met her future husband. On July 26, 1942, Ruby married Loyal Alcott. They made a home in Portland with Ruby's mother until Loyal's death in 1986.
She was a member of the Carnation Rebekah Lodge as a tableau mistress for 23 years and was a member of the Becky Annex. Ruby and Loyal enjoyed traveling to Florida and going to baked bean suppers. She also enjoyed shopping with her daughter, Sharon.
Over the years, Ruby loved to play Bingo and in the past few years enjoyed playing with her friends at St. Pius. She always kept busy doing craft projects from painting, cross stitch pictures, jewelry and crocheting to doll blankets for the local church fair. Ruby loved to share her crafts with her friends and family.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Loyal Alcott; brother Bert Sholes and sisters Vivian Brown, Rheta Ridlon, Lillian Campbell and Frances Leadbetter. She leaves her daughter Sharon Maloon and her husband Dick of Cumberland; her granddaughter Christina Smith and her husband Ron of North Yarmouth; four great-grandchildren Matthew, Emma, Miles and Ella Smith; her brother-in-law Robert Leadbetter of Williamsburg, Va.; her beloved cat Sugar; and several nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.
