Death: Mar. 11, 1926

On March 11th there occurred the death of Ann Shipman Pitts, a woman well beloved in the community in which she had lived her life of more than ninety-seven years, and a wave of sadness swept over many hearts. For several weeks she had been in failing health and deep solicitude had been manifested and not only by her devoted family, but by her many friends, who hoped most earnestly that her tranquil and lovely presence might be spared for more years of inspiration, if not of active usefulness.
While her life had been spared to the world for nearly a century of time, yet it may be said of her that she had never grown old. She always maintained a keen interest in all things of the present day and her smile and cheerfulness of character were truly contagious, exemplifying the happiness that may be attained by looking upon the bright side of life. Her kind words of gratefulness and praise will always be treasured by those who so tenderly cared for her during her last illness.
In her childhood she attended the village school at Middlefield, and afterward attended the old Cherry Valley Academy at Cherry Valley, under the supervision of Professor Belden.
In her religious faith she was a devoted life-long Universalist.
Ann E. Shipman was born in the village of Middlefield, N.Y., August 22nd, 1828, the daughter of William and Ruby Clark Shipman. She was married to Thomas H. Pitts April 18th, 1845, and the greater portion of her life was spent on the Pitts homestead farm in the Town of Middlefield. She is survived by one son, Burdette S. Pitts of Middlefield, one grandson, Floyd T. Pitts of Cooperstown, N.Y., and two great-granddaughters, Linda and Doris Pitts. Also by one nephew, Ambrose C. Shipman of Cooperstown.
The funeral was held at her home in Middlefield Saturday, March 13th, 1926, at two o'clock p.m., the Rev. L. A. Meeker officiating, and interment was in the village cemetery at Middlefield.
