SOPHIA LEA BARKER Passed away at home, in her sleep the morning of Oct. 4, 2007 at the age of 85. Sophia was born to Thad and Nora Shipman on April 8, 1922 in Overbrook, OK. Her mother Nora was an original enrollee of the Chickasaw/Choctaw Nation. Sophia was 1/4 native American of which she was very proud and instilled that pride in her children. She was raised in Abner, OK, where she attended Meadowbrook and Greenville Schools, playing on the basketball and baseball teams. She married Jeff O. Barker on Sept. 16, 1939. They moved to Niles (Fremont) CA in the 40's. She worked as a nurse in the hospital at the Masonic House Decoto (Union City) CA for 35 years, where she dedicated herself to the care of the patients. She retired from there at the age of 62. Sophia spent her retirement years loving and caring for her family. Moving to Tracy, CA in 2000, helping with the care of 4 great-grandsons and then moving in May of 2006 to be near her youngest son and his family. Sophia's love of her family was the most important thing in her life. She loved all the family reunions and get-togethers and the long evenings of playing the card game, pitch. One of her greatest pastimes was beating her husband Jeff at Pitch - she dearly delighted in it. Sophia leaves to survive her, her husband of 68 years, Jeff of Myrtle Creek, OR, her children and their spouses, Kent and Bea Barker, Anchorage, AK; Barbara and Conrad Kaelin, Tracy, CA; Larry and Judi Barker, Myrtle Creek, OR. She will also be dearly remembered and missed by her 8 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her passing her siblings and their families, D.C. and Zelma Shipman, Myrtle Creek, OR; Jean Cary, Ardmore, OK; Gail Shipman, Riddle, OR; sister-in-laws, Lorelie Shipman, Fremont, CA; Gorum Simpson, Ardmore, OK; Margaret Renick Ewing, Ardmore, OK; aunt, Wilbert Gates, Fremont, CA; cousin Wanda Faye Smith, Richmond, CA and many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Sophia was preceded in death by her father Thad E. Shipman, May 1957, her mother Nora Shipman, Dec. 1993 and her brother That Shipman, Jr., Aug. 2003. Services will be held Thurs. Oct. 11, at 11:00 A.M. Mt. View Memorial Chapel, North Old Pacific Hwy., Myrtle Creek, OR. Burial will follow at Roseburg Memorial Gardens, Roseburg, OR. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc.
