Richard William Shewan was born Aug 8th, 1947 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of Gerald A. Shewan (1923 – 2020) and Adeline Gieger Shewan (1924 – 2021). Called "Dick" by his family, he was named for his paternal uncle, 1LT Richard W. Shewan, USA (1920 - 1944) who was killed in France during World War II.

Richard was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, boating and jet skiing and was a board member of the Commodore Perry Yacht Club. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburg Penguins. He attended Erie Otters and Mercyhurst Women's ice hockey games.

Richard died unexpectedly on Aug 7, 2008 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was survived by Patricia Ann Abbott Shewan (1949 - 2013), his wife of 41 years, their two daughters and four grandchildren. He was also survived by his father, mother, two sisters and one brother. Many nieces and nephews also survived.
